Let me start by saying the scenery is getting beautiful! The roads can be an issue in areas which force you to drive slower. We keep the beast at 55MPH since the Toad's owners manual states that is the max speed when being towed. We pulled into the Caribou RV Park about 11 miles from Whitehorse at about 2 in the afternoon. We planned on staying one night, but ended up staying for three. This park is so unlike the last few we have been in. The sites are level, water was at your site, and they had very clean facilities. There was a little walking path around the park that went into the forest.
After settling in, we went into Whitehorse so I could get a money order to pay my fine, GRRR! We drove past the Walmart and the parking lot had 15 rv's in there. The temps are cold and windy, I can't imagine not having heat and hook ups. We stopped at a Vietnamese Restaurant for Pho, it certainly hit the spot. The Yukon River is still iced up, as are all the lakes surrounding the area. Everyone is commenting on how late the spring is this year, about 3-4 weeks behind.
The next morning we got up and went to the Wildlife Preserve on the north side of town. I would certainly recommend this. The habitats are huge for the animals. There is the option of a bus tour or walking tour. We opted for the 3.1 mile walking tour so we could take our time. They have wood bison, elk, caribou, moose, musk oxen, mountain sheep and thin horned sheep. They also have a couple of arctic fox and a lynx. A very enjoyable day, even though it was cold and windy!
After the Preserve, we stopped in town to visit the MacBride Museum. They had interesting pieces of history from the Gold Rush days including Skagway and Dawson City. They had old cabins and old mining equipment like sluices and gold boxes. The cost was $10. each. It killed some time and I learned a little about the area. The miners that came during the gold rush must have been some hardy folks. This is rough area in the Beast, I can't imagine getting there by foot and horseback.
The plan is to stay here until Thursday Morning, then on to Beaver Creek. The road is washed out at the 1500 KM marker, so it is closed to local traffic only. We'll be watching the website closely.
