Newport Mansions, Mystic Seaport

Ashaway, RI
Newport Mansions

Ah, the Great Gatsby, the Astors, the Vanderbilt's.  What would the golden age be without them?  Seems the Railroad tycoons were the lucky ones during the 1800's.  I have seen photos of these huge places but nothing can compare for the real deal.

We decided to take the trolley tour of Newport, RI to see the town and those historic mansions along the way.  On Mondays the price is discounted to $19.62, so why not?  We hopped on the 11 am trolley from the Visitor Center and yes, Newport is another tourist destination.  The island is home to a naval base, an old fort, farms, and Jackie Kennedy's childhood summer home.

There I am, that little person in front of the huge tall gates

We enjoyed the tour as it helped us decide where to drive to and see around the island.  First up was the White Horse Tavern, the oldest in the US.  We had a nice lunch and it was really cool to be in such an old place.

The old ball field.  Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb played exhibition games here

Mystic Seaport, CT

Mystic Seaport is similar to the Shelbourne Museum in that they have folks in period costumes working in various shops and homes to demonstrate what life was like in a Colonial Seaport.  The admission charge is $24.00 and covers the entire property.  It took us all morning and part of the afternoon to wander around all the buildings and ships.  The Charles Morgan is an old whaleship they have refurbished and you can actually take a whale watch tour a few times a year on.

Figureheads

I wouldn't want to go in the ocean in one of these

Anchor in front of the church.  Look at the leaves!

More figureheads.  Very nice exhibit

All in all, the Rhode Island stop was a great one for us!  We loved it there with lots to see and do, the fall colors and best of all..Family.
