Freeport, Maine a town built around LL Bean

Pownal Maine
highs in the 70's (still!)

We enjoyed the Northern Maine area immensely.  What can you say about Lobster, peaceful sunsets and leaf peepahs?  But alas, we needed to move on south.  A brief stop was in order on the way to the Central New York valleys.

We made the obligatory brief stop in Freeport Maine to do a little shopping at LL Bean.  Surprise!  Freeport Maine is like one giant outlet mall.  I'm not sure if the town would exist if not for LL Bean.
We did a little shopping, picking up plaid shirts (flannel of course).  We fell for the recommendation to eat at Linda Bean's.  It was ok, but was definitely tourist food with tourist portions and tourist prices.

We wanted to see more of the coastline and take the little pups out for a walk.  We pulled into a parking spot and while we were deciding where to go, the meter maid came by.  As she was writing own our license plate, Eric stepped out and noted that it was a 15 minute zone and we just pulled in.  She had a sharp wit and acted like a snit.  I guess they get tired of tourists.  Anyway we said we are just trying to find a place for a walk and a drive.  She suggested Camden, Maine along with little places to go along the way.  It was an hour or so away and was a perfect day for a drive.

We stopped on the way back at Red's for a huge Lobster Roll.  They were delicious with drawn butter on the side.  What a yummy treat!

We drove past the Bath ship yards where they are building the new destroyers for the Navy.  The design is amazing and it even looks stealthy.

When I worked, my boss loved Maine and Wicked Whoopie's.  I thought he was a little crazy when he sent them to us for Christmas.  I didn't have one for a few days as at the time I was trying to cut all that sugar from my life.  I caved one night and oh boy!  They are wicked!  They have a shop in Freeport, so of course I had to pick up some!  If you are ever in the area, be sure to pick some up!

We are heading to New York for the next week for some preplanned events.  I'm dreading the long drive and will miss Maine for sure!
